Loved for (Eternal) Life!

I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.” (‭‭Revelation‬ ‭21:2 NIV‬‬‬)

The first time they met, there was an immediate spark. It was his laugh that swept her off her feet. His unconditional love that kept her with Him even though her former suitors continued to call. The way He looked at her without judgment. The way He kept her close in the moments she wanted to run away. He pledged His life to love and protect her and He kept His promise. Each time she felt like she wasn’t good enough. Every thought that said He would become disengaged and find someone else, was vanquished with His steadfast love. It was hard for her to even comprehend how someone like Him would love someone like her.

She often felt that she had done too much. She went too far. No one would love her… until someone did. He was everything she would ever want in a life partner. He was patient. He was kind. He kept no record of wrong. He never brought up old mistakes or reminded her of her faults. And today, he promised to start a new life with her. He promised that He would prepare a place for her and HE did. She wasn’t sure what all that entailed but if it was anything like the life He had been providing for her along the way, she was anxious to see how much more He had up his sleeve.

Everyday, He brought her sunshine. Every difficult trial was met with encouragement for her to keep going. In every moment where she wanted to give up, throw in the towel, or walk away from the relationship, He pursued her. He ran after her, he never left her… because He promised to love her forever.

It seems like a fairytale. It seems too good to be true. It seems like no matter what you may do or what you may be reminded of, you would never be able to deserve that type of love. And unfortunately you are correct. You will never be good enough. You will never not make mistakes; you will always come up short… and He loves you anyhow. In fact, He is aware of the challenges you have to face. He is not only aware, but is willing to accept your trying and is eager to do the rest.

The holy city. New Jerusalem and the image of a wedding is one that the Bible says God spent time preparing. It is the beginning of the best days of our eternity with Him.

How does God show his love though the New Jerusalem, you ask? It is prepared for you. Not the you that you want to hide from others?? Not the you that you would be embarrassed if everyone found you out?? Yes, that you. The you that has issues forgiving. The you that has a temper, the you that is easily angered, the you that holds grudges. He prepared it for you.

Why ? He loves you. He adores you and He is head over heels excited about spending the rest of eternity with you.

“The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.” (Jeremiah 31:3 NIV)

Thought Questions:

  1. Do you notice the different ways God shows His love to you personally?
  2. How does it make you feel to know that you are loved just the way you are?
